1. Blood On The Wattle We're a colonial nation in an ancient native land Descendants of an empire, but we came here with a plan To tame a rugged country and to maximise the soil And what lies beneath it as rewards of honest toil But the soil’s now turned to dust, the land is hard and dry We take more than we give, ‘cos we’re focused on the bottom line In the battle for the balance, I fear we’re losing the fight Just ‘cos it’s happening elsewhere doesn’t make it right. Shalt not steal, shalt not kill Shalt not covet, shalt not lie Thou shalt not false idols worship Oh, promised land, will you survive it Terra nullius was a subterfuge for an invasion The long line of nations, not included in the equation There is blood on the wattle, broken bones buried in the sand Dispossession and destruction, the foundations of this land Shalt not steal, shalt not kill Shalt not covet, shalt not lie Thou shalt not false idols worship Oh, promised land, will you survive it How long will it take before she's got nothing more to give When the wells run dry and it's difficult to live Will we hand it back then? Will we admit to our mistakes? Or are we going to learn our lessons before it's too late. Shalt not steal, shalt not kill Shalt not covet, shalt not lie Thou shalt not false idols worship Oh, promised land, will you survive it

2. Driving into another day Looks like the second sunrise of the day The first just went from black to grey As we're looking ahead It's funny, that's what we both say Sometimes I don't like what's running through my head And some days I just feel like staying in bed There's a cloud over me I'd rather be someone else instead But I've made up my mind I'm knowing that I'm on my way Like driving into another day And I'm thinking back to different days When I found my love down the crossways And it mightn't have been But some things are just pre-ordained There's a force unseen that's spinning around It's guiding us to where our future is found So if you open your mind It might just take you where you're bound. And I've made up my mind I'm knowing that I'm on my way Like driving into another day I’m seeing things clearer than I've seen them before There's a light shining through, lifting my mood off the floor And you're part of my plans to follow new and different ways Like driving into another day. It’s just like the second sunrise of the day We’re leaving behind the gloom and grey And we’re looking ahead To where we know we’ll be OK And I've made up my mind I'm knowing that I'm on my way Like driving into another day

Crosses on the highway, seems there’s more every year As I go driving past them, I think about who put them there Who are missing loved ones, whose life will never be the same Crosses on the highway, on every one a different name You were so full of life, you’d just turned twenty one So much lay out ahead of you, so much you hadn’t done The promise of a lifetime, so much to look forward to But you never see it coming, never think it could be you Slow down, slow down Think about where you’re bound You’re a long time in the ground Slow down. For those that stay behind the pain will never end The tragedy of such a loss, so hard to comprehend But you don’t get second chances sometimes, it’s just not fair That those with most to live for, often the ones who don’t get there. Slow down, slow down Think about where you’re bound You’re a long time in the ground Slow down.

4. Christmas Island The curve of the earth hides a lot Like who I am and who I'm not Family in tow I set forth No invading horde from a hostile north We've got no cure for our affliction No travel insurance protection To a land where everyone's go is fair Except for those without air fare To Christmas Island we're setting sail With picnic lunch and water pail On Christmas Island we'll hope again For peace on earth, goodwill to all men Love thy neighbour and do unto them As you wish for yourself in return Where are the boundless plains so free For those who come across the sea We crowded onto a rusty wreck Sat low in the water, smelt of fuel and sweat Sank half way to our distant goal To peace on earth I'll never get To Christmas Island we're setting sail With picnic lunch and water pail On Christmas Island we'll hope again For peace on earth, goodwill to all men Merry Christmas, war is over Now she sits looking out at razor wire While our children play in the Christmas dust Prisoners of fear and prejudice To Christmas Island we're setting sail With picnic lunch and water pail On Christmas Island we'll hope again For peace on earth, goodwill to all men

Lonely Man 04:48
5. Lonely Man He’s going end on end, round the bend Through the mill, he’s in there still He can’t think straight, can’t contemplate Peace of mind, so hard to find He doesn’t believe he’s able to achieve Has anything to contribute what anyone would accept He’s living in his mind most of the time He’s got no plan, he’s a lonely man He just wants to do right, doesn’t want to fight People reckon he’s ok, he thinks it’s just something they say Thinks he’s not all he could be, but isn’t that like you and me? Believes he’s nothing to give, no reason to live When you are walking alone in your mind There’s no one to help you, I think that you’ll find There’s no one who knows what you’re really about There’s no one to care for you ‘til you come out Try not to focus on what you perceive ‘Cause nothing’s as bad as your dark thoughts believe Don’t be afraid of a kind helping hand And don’t be afraid of yourself Lonely man

6. The Things You Do As I stepped out today Trying to make it a better day than yesterday Trying to concentrate on the things I shouldn’t say If you should pass my way Well, I hope that’s something that’ll be OK If you could be happy that would really make my day Well I’m six feet tall but I feel so small Until I’m standing next to you Well you’re not that small, no that’s not it at all It’s just in the things you do Well I’m not sure what you see But at least you’re still there looking back at me And where I’m standing is a pretty good place to be But I don’t understand What I’ve got to give, I should have had this planned I can’t help feeling like a boy and not a man Well I’m six feet tall but I feel so small Until I’m standing next to you Well you’re not that small, no that’s not it at all It’s just in the things you do As I stepped out today Trying to make it a better day than yesterday Trying to concentrate on the things I shouldn’t say Well I’m six feet tall but I feel so small Until I’m standing next to you Well you’re not that small, no that’s not it at all It’s just in the things you do

7. Howling At The Moon Just leave the keys in the door baby as you go Let the curtain fall down on the whole damn show It's too late now to go back again The moonscape times are about to begin We've been searching elsewhere and I might be dim But it's too cold outside and too hot in There's nothing more important than what's at stake It's the only home we'll ever make I've seen more water by the side of the road I hear the trains at night with their heavy load I see the rigs like mushrooms as they spring from the ground It's where the dollars lie so don't make a sound I've been howling at the moon by the side of the lake Still waiting for the evil drought to break Well we're sending out an S.O.S. 'Cause you can't eat coal and can't drink gas Well now the sign of the times is you must want more Try not to think about drought and war It's too late now to go back again The moonscape times are about to begin I've been howling at the moon by the side of the lake Still waiting for the people’s rage to break Well we're sending out an S.O.S. 'Cause you can't eat coal and you can't drink gas

The Bull 04:00
8. The Bull Paint peeling off the walls Roof leaking like a sieve Rooms dark and musty dank Is this any way to live A man walks up the drive With a letter in his hand But it seems there's no one home No one yet again Waking in alarm Won’t let her come to harm Can't ever shake the sound Of the bull that ran her down A pool out in the yard Seems kinda out of place It's for the kids, she just explains For when the summer sun turns fierce A girl sits on her bed With a dog wrapped in her arms She's kinda hard to see Amongst the rags that keep her warm Waking in alarm Won’t let her come to harm Can't ever shake the sound Of the bull that ran her down Waking up in fright In the dark heart of the night Pulse racing from the fear Of the bull that seemed so near

9. Raining Underground I’m goin’ down to the lakes today Let the cold, clear water take me away Take me away from my trouble and strife Bring some peace into my life I’m goin’ down to the river today Let the clean flowing water take me away Let the sails that are tied to my masts unfurl Blow away the troubles of this world I went down to the lakes today I saw no water, I’m sorry to say I can’t understand where the water could go Maybe they don’t want us to know It’s raining underground or so they say Raining underground under the lakes today The tears of the lakes cryin’ for our sins For the beauty that once had been I ain’t goin’ down to the lakes again ‘Cause goin’ down there just causes too much pain Fifteen million years is a long, long time Someone should pay for this crime I ain’t goin’ down to the river no more Since I heard what they’re dumping on that river shore I can’t understand how it continues to be You can poison a river for a fee It’s raining underground or so they say Raining underground under the lakes today The tears of the lakes cryin’ for our sins For the beauty that once had been

Driving through a town I used to know I’m in no rush so I'm taking it slow The feeling's not the same and it's not just me Like part of it's sold across the sea Talking to a friend I used to know About the places we used to go They've been shut down along the line The things we value change over time I miss the way we used to be We only wanted what we'd need But times have changed now from the past And time is moving way too fast. Every year we’ve got to grow The more we learn the less we know And a finite world we're living on The quicker it's used the quicker it's gone I miss the way we used to be We only wanted what we'd need But times have changed now from the past And time is moving way too fast.

11. Tick of the Clock In a far away field of rubble and mud Men lived and died in trenches of blood It’ll all be over by Christmas, they thought While backwards and forwards they fought The tick of the clock The stroke of the pen The end of all wars Never again Sixteen million souls eventually lost What justifies such incomprehensible cost While others rebuilt, men divided the spoils Gathered in a room of reflection The tick of the clock The stroke of the pen The end of all wars Never again Fields of green grew back over mud Red poppies echoed the rivers of blood The madness that ceased at 11am Has been played out again and again The tick of the clock The stroke of the pen The end of all wars Never again In a far away field that's tattered and torn A new peaceful world still waits to be born Who’s watching the clock, who’s keeping the count ‘Til the time on the clock has run out The tick of the clock The stroke of the pen The end of all wars Never again

12. Roller Coaster Well come on step on board and take a ride It’s going to take you on a trip inside Into the highs and lows you can’t ignore You never know what this ride has in store ‘Cause there’s a world out there that’s spinning round It’s going to pick you up and let you down Sometimes the best you can do is hold on tight Just hold on, hold on... and ride that roller coaster If you’ve ever had a day that kept you down You know that if you look ahead, it eventually turns around No ride lasts forever, everything has to end But while you’re on it, batten down and just ride Hard round every bend Ride that roller coaster Ride that roller coaster Ride it down, everything turns around Ride that roller coaster Everything turns around

about

Drought and War is Greg Windred's debut album, recorded during 2013 at Somerset Studios in Narellan NSW. It is an album of struggle and overcoming adversity, the struggles being faced on a global, national, local and personal level. Never forcing opinions upon the listener, and, whilst dealing with some weighty issues, never maudlin or sentimental, the album leads you on a roller coaster ride of emotions.

The album, and Greg's music in general, springs from the Australian landscape, whilst at the same time exploring universal themes. It seeks optimism against a backdrop of struggle, persecution and indifference, providing an “acerbic view of the world as it was, is and should be”. Greg's music is passionate and honest, distinctly Australian and expertly delivered.
